Uta Bellion

"A civil engineer (MSc) by training, Uta Bellion is the Director of The Pew Environment Group’s European Marine Programme, based in Brussels. She also co-ordinates OCEAN2012, a new alliance of organisations dedicated to transforming European fisheries, and the Shark Alliance, a coalition of over 70 NGOs dedicated to the science-based conservation of sharks.

"Uta has considerable experience of leading international environmental campaigns. With Greenpeace some of her campaign victories have included the end of toxic waste dumping at sea, the end of the incineration of toxic waste at sea, the end of the use of chlorine bleaching in the European pulp and paper industry, the ban on the export of toxic waste from OECD to non-OECD countries, the protection of a number of pristine valleys of the Canadian Great Bear Rainforest and indigenous lands in the Amazon.

"Before joining The Pew Environment Group, Uta led Greenpeace International’s climate and energy campaign: driving a worldwide clean energy revolution. Uta also served on the Greenpeace International Board of Directors from 1990-1995, acting as Chairman from 1993 to 1995. Between 1995 and 1998, she was policy and campaigns director for Friends of the Earth England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. In 1999 and 2000 she ran her own NGO consultancy. Born in Germany, Uta has held British citizenship since 1997."
