Background

VBC Ferro Alloys have proposed to build a 120 megawatt coal-fired power station. On its website the company states that "to overcome the difficulties in obtaining power, the Company is going to set up 120MW (2X60MW) coal based captive power plant at Bodepalli Village, Kagaznagar Mandal, Adilabad District, Telangana. The necessary coal linkage has been obtained, required land is in place and other steps such as Pollution Control Permission, water and other facilities are on the anvil."[1][2]

According to a November 2013 report, VBC Ferro Alloys decided to speed up the 2x60 MW captive plant in order to facilitate its speedy implementation. The company wrote, "Keeping in view the acute power shortage scenario in AP, the board felt it necessary to implement the captive power plant on a priority basis as the existing ferro alloy unit is unable to carry on its manufacturing operations due to high power tariff and non-availability of adequate power."[3]

An EIA for the captive coal plant and other projects were submitted by VBC in March 2016.[4]

As of May 2018 the project has not received environmental clearance, and plans appear shelved.
