{{#badges: tobaccowiki}} Vance Carter Broach, Jr. was a Brown & Williamson Group Product Manager for Raleigh, Belair and Viceroy. He was a Brown & Williamson Group Product Manager of New Products circa 1977. He wrote the famous 1975 memo about positioning cigarette advertising to portray smoking as "initiations into the adult world," and in the "illicit pleasure category," and to associate cigarettes with beer, pot, sex, etc.
Broach wrote:
- In the young smoker's mind, a cigarette falls into the same category with wine, beer, shaving, wearing a bra (or purposely not wearing one)...For the young starter, a cigarette is associated with introduction to sex life, with courtship, with smoking "pot" and keeping late studying hours....[For the young smoker], the cigarette is the entrance ticket to the hall of the adult society.[1]
Biography
Vance Carter Broach, Jr. worked for Brown & Williamson as Group Product Manager for Raleigh, Viceroy, Belair, Fact (the "low gas" cigarette) and New Products in the Marketing Department in 1977 and Group Product Manager for Viceroy, Plug, Tube Rose and New Products in the Marketing Department from 1976-77. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee for Non-Menthol Cigarette Products in the Marketing Department in 1976. Broach was also Brand Manager for Viceroy, Chewing Tobacco, Snuff in the marketing department in 1973, New Products Brand Manager in the Marketing Department from 1971-72, and Brand Manager for Viceroy, Pipe Tobacco, Chewing Tobacco, Long Cut, and Snuff in the Marketing Department in 1973.
