Description

Anglo American Thermal Coal (AATC) has contracted Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) to build the plant for its own use and possibly for the sale of electricity to South Africa’s national grid. VZI sees its power requirements at 350MW (possibly for sale to the grid), another 150MW for its Scorpion/Skorpion Zinc mine in Namibia, and another 100MW for its Konkola Copper Mine in Zambia.[1]

The power plant would operate using low-quality discarded coal from Anglo's Dalyshope Phase 1 Coal Mine as fuel--coal that is reportedly unsuitable for Eskom power stations.[1]

The plant was expected to be operational in 2018.[2]

In April 2014 it was reported that the final scoping report for the proposed 600MW plant had been rejected by the Department Environmental Affairs. The project had been strongly opposed by NGOs and local communities over its environmental impacts. Anglo American and Vedanta said they are reapplying for environmental authorization.[3]

As of May 2017, there are no recent reports of activity on the project and it appears to be abandoned.
