Background on Plant

Vuglegirska power station is a four-unit coal-fired power plant with a total capacity of 1,200 MW. The plant was completed between 1972 and 1973, and is owned by Energy Company of Ukraine. The power station also has three 800 MW power units with single furnace gas and fuel-oil boilers, intended for heating supply. Due to the lack of gas and fuel-oil since the country's tensions with Russia, the 800 MW power units are in the cold standby.[1]

On 29 March 2013, four power units of the station were destroyed as a result of a major fire in which one employee was killed and eight injured workers were hospitalized. Energy and Coal Industry Minister of Ukraine Eduard Stavytsky said the units would be restored.[2]
