"Dr. Walter W. Carey joined the Garick Board of Directors as a Technical Advisor in February 2007. Dr. Carey retired from Nestle USA, Inc. in January 2005, in which his latest position was Director of Environmental Operations, Regulatory/Policy for Nestle in the United States. Coinciding with this position, Dr. Carey was also President of New Milford Farms, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Nestle USA, Inc.
"New Milford Farms was engaged in the manufacturing of agricultural soil amendments from organic byproducts arising from the Nestle manufacturing operations. The major raw materials processed at New Milford Farms were spent tea leaves and spent coffee grounds, which contained coffee oil. Because composting spent coffee grounds was problematic at first due to the production of volatile fatty acids which lead to a very objectionable odor, Dr. Carey worked diligently on developing a way to compost the coffee grounds into beautiful, useable organic compost.
"Prior to his latest role, Dr. Carey has held numerous other positions with various Nestle companies. His major responsibilities included environmental issues, energy, safety, and computer-integrated manufacturing issues for Nestle and Nestle subsidiary operations within the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
"From Syracuse University, Dr. Carey received his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (1965), Master of Science in Chemical Engineering (1966), and Doctor of Philosophy: Chemical Engineering – Mathematics Minor (1970). He also received a Paralegal Certificate from Mercy College in 1979 and a Master of Science – Management from Polytechnic University in 1984.
"Dr. Carey sat on the Board of Directors for the US Composting Council (USCC) from 1995 – 2004 and Housatonic Valley Association, 1990 – present. In February 2008, Dr. Carey received the Hi Kellogg Award for Outstanding Service to the Composting Industry from the USCC for his significant contributions to the composting industry."[1]
