{{#Badges: CoalSwarm}} In 2006, Arctic Slope Regional Corporation and BHP Billiton agreed to a five-year investigation of the bituminous coal beds south of Point Lay and west of the National Petroleum Reserve. Arctic Slope proposed a 50-megawatt (MW) coal plant on site, but it did not apply for an air permit with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The Sierra Club designated the project cancelled in 2009.[1]
