Location
The map below shows the approximate location of the plant, on Xiyong Bay near the village of Baguang at the south end of the Dapeng peninsula east of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province.
Background on Plant
The project was planned on the coast of the South China Sea, 50 km east of Shenzhen. Shenzhen Energy Group was in the process of beginning preparatory work on the project when the Dapeng authorities asked them to cease. In August 2013, the municipal government decided to no longer put forward any plans for coal plants. [1] The project had attracted strong public opposition, primarily due to concerns about air pollution. Although Shenzhen Energy Group had received permission from China's National Energy Administration in January 2013, public opposition strengthened after the approval. In June 43 Lawmakers called for cancellation. In July, the human settlements and environmental commissioned agreed that the plant would damage the local ecosystem and that Shenzhen was not a suitable location for coal plants.[2][3]
