Background

The project is being developed by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority and Excelerate Energy. Excelerate Energy submitted its formal application to FERC in April 2013. On July 24, 2015, FERC issued the order authorizing the construction and operation of the project.[2]

The installation will include a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and submarine lines for gas supply. The complex will provide fuel to the Central Aguirre power plant. It is planned for 2018.[3]

As a result of changed circumstances, the Aguirre Offshore GasPort project, including the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal conditionally authorized by the regulator, was cancelled by the company in November of 2019. Excelerate filed in a request to FERC to vacate the authorization for the construction of the facilities that would have included a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with a baseload capacity of 500 mmscf/d, minimal infrastructure to moor the vessel, and a subsea pipeline to deliver the gas onshore.[4]
