In 1997, Akira Watanabe was the Managing Director, Yokohama Area Sales, Japan Tobacco, Inc.

In 1993, he was the first author of the paper "Induction of Antibodies to a k V Region by Gene Immunization". The paper listed his affiliation as Department of Medicine and the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging, University of California, San Diego.
