Biographical Information
"Alan has considerable experience of campaigning as the founder director and Chief Executive of the Basic Skills Agency. He led the campaign for adult literacy from the 1970s until the Government developed a national strategy to address the issue in 2000.
"He was awarded an OBE in 1994 for services to adult literacy. In September 2007 he became Chair of Trustees of a long established international charity, Education Action. [Formerly World University Service]. Education Action works in former war torn countries, mainly in Africa and with refugees from war living in the UK. However, because of the serious financial crisis facing Education Action, Alan agreed to become the Interim Chief Executive and has successfully turned around the charity.
"Alan is actively involved in health issues as a Non-Executive Director of Waltham Forest Primary Care Trust and leads on end of life care."[1]
