Amy Gutmann is a Trustee of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and is on the advisory board for Renaissance Weekend.

"Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania, joined Carnegie Corporation’s board of trustees in December 2005.

"Gutmann, a noted political philosopher, was inaugurated as the eighth president of the University of Pennsylvania in 2004 and holds faculty appointments in the School of Arts and Sciences, the Annenberg School for Communication and the Graduate School of Education.

"She joined Penn after spending nearly 20 years at Princeton University where, over time, she served as Dean of the Faculty, Academic Advisor to the President and eventually Provost. The founding director of Princeton’s University Center for Human Values, she was named the Laurance S. Rockefeller University Professor of Politics and the University Center for Human Values. As a professor of politics at Princeton, she also held the Andrew W. Mellon Professorship. Upon her departure from Princeton, the Horace Goldsmith Foundation endowed the Professor Amy Gutmann Freshman Seminar in Human Values in her honor.

"Her numerous awards include the Centennial Medal from Harvard University, which is awarded to “graduate alumni who have made exceptional contributions to society,” the President’s Distinguished Teaching Award from Princeton, the Betram Mott Award, presented “in recognition of outstanding achievement towards advancing the goals of higher education” by the American Association of University Professors, Rider College, the Ralph J. Bunche Award of the American Political Science Association, and the North American Society for Social Philosophy Book award. She has received honorary degrees from Wesleyan University and Kalamazoo College.

"Gutmann has published extensively during her academic career, including her most recent books: Ethics and Politics (4th edition, 2005, with Dennis Thompson), Why Deliberative Democracy? (2004, with Dennis Thompson) and Identity in Democracy (2003). She is also the author of numerous articles, essays and book reviews that have appeared in scholastic journals and literary supplements.

"Gutmann is a member of the American Philosophical Society and is past president of the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy. She is the W.E.B. DuBois Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and a fellow of both the National Academy of Education and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

"Gutmann holds a B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard-Radcliffe College, a M.Sc. in political science from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Harvard University." [1]
