Background

The Ashuganj-Bakhrabad 1 Gas pipeline is operated by Gas Transmission Company Limited (GTCL), a subsidiary of Petrobangla. It was constructed to transport gas from the northern fields of Rashidpur, Habiganj, and Kailashtilla to the gas-deficient southeastern region. It links Bangladesh's North-South pipeline with the Bakhrabad-Chittagong gas transmission system.

The pipeline is routed through a poorly drained lowland which is subject to annual flooding. To prevent it from floating during the monsoon season, a concrete weight coating was applied to the entire length of the pipeline during construction.

In 2010, it was announced that a second phase of the pipeline—Ashuganj-Bakhrabad 2 Gas Pipeline—would be built parallel to the Ashuganj-Bakhrabad 1 Gas pipeline to supply additional gas to the Dhaka & Chittagong areas.
