Background

In April 2012, The Economic Times reported that a site had been identified for the project, which is one of three Ultra Mega Power Projects planned for the state.

In July 2014 it was reported that the Odisha government had identified land for the proposed power station at Bijoypatna in Chandbali tehsil of Bhadrak district, with coal supplied by Bankhui coal block. The Odisha government said it was seeking the coal ministry's approval for the block, after which the project would be put up for bidding.

In July 2015 the Union power ministry said it would soon invite fresh bids for the Sundargarh Ultra Mega Power Project in Odisha, and that proposals for UMPPs at Bijoypatana in Bhadrak district and Narla in Kalahandi district (Ghogarpalli Ultra Mega Power Project) had been shelved.
