Biographical Information

"Bob Abberley has been Assistant General Secretary of UNISON since 2002. He started his career working in the operating theatre in Hereford Hospital and his trade union career started in 1979. Bob was a trade union officer of COSHE from 1979 to 1993; he spent most of his trade union career working in health and as UNISON’s head of health from 1993 to 2002. He now manages 12 UNISON regions and deals with recruitment and organising.

"He is a member of the TUC General Council and has served on a number of Government bodies including the NHS Task Force on Staff Involvement in Decision Making, NHS Modernisation Board, NHS University and NHS Ministerial Sounding Board. He chaired the NHS Widening Participation in Learning Steering Group. He served as a member of the community cohesion review team chaired by Ted Cantle, following the race riots in 2001. Bob also serves as a member of NIACE Partnership Council and is a Board Member of Managers in Partnership, Care Connect Learning, Unilearn and the College of Operating Department of Practitioners."[1]
