Background
The Brent System pipeline transports oil from 20 oil fields in the North Sea via Cormorant Alpha oil platform to the Sullom Voe Terminal in Shetland, Scotland. The pipeline consists of 36-inch (910 mm) diameter steel (API 5L X60) and is 147 km (91 mi) long. It has capacity of 100,000 barrels per day (16,000 cubic meters per day). Since 3 August 2009, it is operated by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company, replacing the previous operator Royal Dutch Shell.[1][2]
Spills
In January 2013, the pipeline was temporarily shut down after a leak was discovered by the Cormorant Alpha platform operators. According to a Taqa spokesperson, however, there was not a "connection between the Brent pipeline system and the pipeline involved in the release," and "The hydrocarbons released are contained within the platform leg and none have been released into the environment."[3]
