British American Tobacco Australia (BATA) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the London-headquartered British American Tobacco.[1] On its website BATA sttaes that it manufactures a total of over 18 billion cigarettes at plants in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Western Samoa. It also exports cigarettes "to other locations in the Pacific Islands through British American Tobacco Australasia's subsidiaries." The company calculates that its market share is 45.9% in Australia, 75.2% in New Zealand and 100% in the Pacific Islands.[2]
In June 2004, BATA objected to the Australian government putting graphic health warnings on tobacco products. [3] Instead, BATA cited research undertaken for BATA by Crosby/Textor that the advertisements would have no effect on overall smoking rates. "Community attitude research in Australia shows that fully 88% of people interviewed believe that a national education program targeting children would be a more appropriate use of resources than putting new graphic health warnings on cigarette packets."
