Biographical Details
"Bryan Stevenson, Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative and Professor of Clinical Law at the New York University School of Law, has won national acclaim for his work challenging bias against the poor and people of color in the criminal justice system. A native of Milton, Delaware, Bryan joined the Southern Center as a second year law student and, after two student internships with the Center, joined the staff as an attorney in 1985 after graduating from Harvard Law School and receiving a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Four years later, he and others at the Center helped establish the Alabama Capital Representation Resource Center, which later became the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI)... He received a MacArthur Fellowship (nicknamed the "Genius Award") in 1995 and was co-recipient of the 2009 Gruber Prize for Justice, which is presented to individuals or organizations for contributions that have advanced the cause of justice as delivered through the legal system."
