Background

Canvey LNG Terminal was a proposed LNG import terminal in Canvey Island, East region, UK.[1] The project, first proposed in 2005, had been planned to begin operating in 2010, but its initial planning application was rejected in 2006 by local council on environmental grounds after residents expressed opposition to project.[2] In March 2007, the Canvey partners appealed the local government's refusal to grant planning permission.[3] However, delays in the planning process combined with frustration at the Health and Safety Executive, who "failed to engage" according to a project partner, eventually led to project partner Centrica to withdraw its support, leading the project's remaining partners to withdraw their appeal.[2][4]

The project was a joint venture between Centrica, LNG Japan (a joint venture between Sumitomo Corp. and Sojitz Corp.), Calor Group, and Osaka Gas.[5] It would have converted an existing liquified petroleum gas (LPG) terminal on a brownfield site into a LNG receiving terminal.[6] The site was also the UK's first LNG facility, which operated from 1964 until it was converted in 1990 to a LPG facility.[2]

Opposition

The proposal to convert the existing Canvey Island gas terminal to LNG was rejected after the town's councils expressed concern that importing LNG could be dangerous.[7]
