The Capitol Commission is a 501(c)(3) charitable and religious nonprofit corporation. According to it's website, the Christian group is committed to reaching out to legislators "to disciple them, and to prepare them for a lifetime of ministry."[1] The organization has both state and national ministries, providing religious services to legislators. It has a state director in eighteen states whose "role is to be a pastor to all who work within the political arena." The organization gained 544 new legislative members since the 2010 election.[2]

According to an organizational press release, "the average percentage of elected officials participating in our Bible studies has been between 12% and 20%. In some states there have been more than fifty legislators who have attended at least one Bible study."[3]

The organization's president is Jim Young. He was previously the North Carolina State Director and the East Coast Regional Director. He founded Sportworks Ministry, an organization that provides ministry services to student-athletes at North Carolina State University. He also formerly worked at Combustion Engineering, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio, as the manager of production and product development.[4]

Ties to the American Legislative Exchange Council

The Capitol Commission was one of 60 exhibitors at the American Legislative Exchange Council's annual meeting in August 2011. The organization described itself in the event's agenda as an organization that exists "not to reform society through political influence or legislation, but to be a vehicle of God is transforming the hearts and lives of elected officials with the gospel of Jesus Christ."[5]

About ALEC
ALEC is a corporate bill mill. It is not just a lobby or a front group; it is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators their wishlists to benefit their bottom line. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC's operations. They pay for a seat on ALEC task forces where corporate lobbyists and special interest reps vote with elected officials to approve “model” bills.
