Care Quality Commission
"The Care Quality Commission began operating on 1 April 2009 as the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. We replaced three earlier commissions: the Healthcare Commission, the Commission for Social Care Inspection and the Mental Health Act Commission." [1] They host Healthwatch England.
In 7 April 2009: "In its first week, the CQC is forced to defend Cynthia Bower's appointment as its chief executive. She had been chief executive of the NHS's West Midlands strategic health authority in 2006-08, when concern first emerged about what the Healthcare Commission later called "appalling" care at Stafford hospital, and was criticised for doing too little to investigate. Between 400 and 1,200 patients died due to poor treatment, the commission estimated." [1]
On 15 May 2008, the Department of Health announced that Barbara Young, Baroness Young of Old Scone, had been appointed as shadow Chair of the Care Quality Commission. On 26 Dec 2009, Barbara Young announced that she is stepping down from the role, effective February 2010. Dame Jo Williams (Deputy Chairman of the CQC) will act as Chairman until a successor is appointed. On 1 October 2010 Dame Jo Williams was confirmed as the Chair of CQC. She resigned on 7 September 2012. wiki
