Background

The Crossroads Gas Pipeline was originally built to transport oil in 1957, and was converted to natural gas by NIPSCO Industries in 1995.[2][3] This conversion was part of a strategy to deliver natural gas from U.S. and Canadian supply basins through the Chicago area and into expanding eastern markets.[4]

In 2016, the pipeline was purchased by TransCanada as part of a $10.2 billion acquisition of the Columbia Pipeline Group, a former NiSource subsidiary, that created one of the largest gas transmission networks in North America.[5] According to TransCanada, the Crossroads Pipeline now has multiple interconnects including: Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America, Trunkline Gas Company, Vector Pipeline, and Panhandle Eastern that allow it to access mid-continent, Rocky Mountain, Gulf Coast, Permian, and Canadian supplies. Crossroads accesses markets in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and in the East.[1]
