David Goerlitz is an ex-"Winston man" who modeled for ads to promote the brand in the 1980s. He subsequently became a professional speaker against smoking in high schools. (P. In testimony to Congress in in 1989, Goerlitz stated
As the Winston man, I helped one of the largest
tobacco companies in the world push nicotine on our young people. Having come to recognize the horrible mistake that I have made in modeling for Winston cigarettes and glamorizing a product that kills, I have come to our nation's capital to urge members of the U.S. Congress to support legislation to restrict tobacco advertising and promotional activities that lure, tempt, misguide, and encourage 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14-year-old young boys and girls to become addicted to for the rest of their lives, as
I know they are.[1]
