The Dendrobium mine is an existing underground coal mine owned and operated by Illawarra Coal a subsidiary of South32.

Illawarra Coal who own the mine are intending to extend operations to keep the mine open until 2048.[1] At present the mine has consents to run until 2030.[2]

BHP Billiton (of which South32 is a demerged subsidiary) stated that Dendrobium "is approved to produce up to 5.2 million tonnes of coking coal per annum with an expected mine life in excess of 20 years." The Bluescope Steel Port Kembla Steelworks and the Whyalla Steelworks "are the major customers. In addition to these Australian based customers; coal is exported via the Port Kembla Coal Terminal to international customers."[3]

Location

The Dendrobium mine is located approximately 8 kilometres west of Wollongong, in New South Wales.[4]

Coal Mine Background

The mine began operations in 2002.[1] Since the original application approval the Dendrobium development consent has been modified seven times.[5]

In 2015 there was an investigation into the Dendrobium mine which found that the impacts of longwall mining on one tributary to Wongawilli Creek were greater than had been predicted. As a result, the Department required Illawarra Coal to provide the Department with a remediation plan for the tributary, to be prepared in consultation with WaterNSW.[6]

South32 is a demerged subsidiary of BHP founded in 2016.[7]
