Dorothy P. Rice, Sc.D. was a statistician at the University of California San Francisco, and an Anti-Tobacco Expert. She helped produce economic reports that quantified the social costs of smoking.

Biography

Five health economists, led by Dr. Dorothy P. Rice of the University of California at San Francisco, published a study in 1986 that found cigarettes cost the nation $53.7 billion each year in health care costs and income lost by sick smokers and those who die. Direct medical care costs for smokers were found to be $23.3 billion more than for nonsmokers.(L. White, Merchants of Death, 1988).

Dr. Rice is a Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences with joint appointments at the Institute for Health and Aging at the University of California, San Francisco and at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, Division of Research, Oakland, California.
