The Douglas mine is majority owned by BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa, a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. The mine, which has both underground, opencut operations and a processing plant, is located approximately 25 kilometres south east of Witbank.
BHP Billiton states on its website that the mine "is currently in the process of closing, and its remaining reserves will be merged with the neighbouring Middelburg Mine Services during the current financial year, as part of the Douglas-Middelburg Optimisation (DMO) Project. Douglas supplies its products into the export, domestic and local power station markets."[1]
