Gary Berson is a partner in the law firm Clayton Utz and is described as "a corporate litigator with extensive experience in product liability, environmental and toxic tort litigation, advisory work and regulatory affairs. He acts for Australian and overseas corporations including those involved in mining, oil, steel, microwave technology, pharmaceuticals and chemicals." [1] Berson became a partner in 1988.
In 2005 the Australian mining company, Anvil Mining, told The Age that Berson had spent three months investigating claims that the company had provided logistical support to the Democratic Republic of Congo's military for what became known as the Kilwa massacre. A United Nations investigation estimated that an estimated 100 innocent civilians were massacred by the military. The Age reported that an Anvil spokeswoman said Berson had "found no credible basis for claims Anvil had knowingly provided government soldiers in the republic with drivers, trucks and the use of an aircraft...". Anvil's spokeswoman said Berson had spent two weeks in the Congo investigating the claims as part of his investigation but she refused to release the report. [2]
