Background

Gas Atacama FLNG Terminal is a proposed LNG terminal in Antofagasta, Chile.

The company GasAtacama has planned to build an estimated $350 million dollar offshore LNG terminal to supply various metal mines in Chile's Atacama desert. However, as mining in Chile has decreased in value during recent years, financial interest in the project has wavered and any potential deals with gas suppliers have been delayed. High costs, tepid expansion by mining operations, and local opposition have thus far slowed investment down significantly.

Originally, GasAtacama was owned by the private-equity fund Southern Cross and Spanish energy company Endesa.. But in 2014, Endesa bought out Southern Cross's share (50%) of GasAtacama for $309 million. Now that ownership is under control of one company, plans for the Floating LNG terminal may commence due to renewed interest after the purchase.

There have been no updates since 2014 and the project is presumed to be cancelled.
