Geoffrey C. Hazard, Ph.D.: Plaintiff
Biography
Geoffrey C. Hazard was a ethics expert at Yale Law School (NLJ 5/23/94). Hazard says Brown & Williamson/N.Y. Times documents show "abuse of the attorney-client privilege" by Shook, Hardy & Bacon. "There is no possible reason for a law firm to be doing this except to gain the protection of the privilege," with the apparent purpose of shielding the results of unfavorable scientific studies from public view. "I think it's an abuse of the legal empowerment to maintain confidences. A court presented with that question would and should hold that the material is not covered by the [attorney-client] privilege." (NLJ 5/23/94).
