Gerald A. Long was President of R.J. Reynolds in 1986. Long replaced Edward A. Horrigan, Jr. as president of R.J. Reynolds's domestic tobacco business in 1983. He started out as a research chemist for Lorillard.
Biography
Gerald A. Long was a Research Chemist for Lorillard. (PMI's Introduction to Privilege Log and Glossary of Names, Estate of Burl Butler v. PMI, et al, April 19, 1996). Long was president of R.J. Reynolds in 1986 (L. White, Merchants 1988). Long was R.J. Reynolds's number two man in 1983 (Barbarians 1990). Long replaced Ed Horrigan as president of R.J. Reynolds's domestic tobacco business in 1983?-? (Barbarians 1990). According to RJRT Senior Executive Gerald Long, as a woman's cigarette, More has spectacular growth. When sales of More, brown cigarette, began to lag, RJRT decided in 1980 to reposition the brand to make it appeal to women. Sales then took off (L. White, Merchants 1988). In a further refinement, to appeal to younger women, RJRT produced a beige cigarette called More Light, and targeted the advertising at young women (L. White, Merchants 1988).
