Giurgiu–Ruse Gas Pipeline is an operating pipeline running between the Romanian city of Giurgiu and the Bulgarian city of Ruse.

Background

The 26 kilometer pipeline runs between Giurgiu in Romania and Ruse in Bulgaria. The project received around 23 billion euros (US$24.7 billion) in funding from the EU and maintains a capacity of 1.5 bcm per year and a has reverse flow option. Work on the interconnector was carried out by Austria’s Habau and Romania’s Inspect. The pipeline was initially scheduled to be ready by 2013 and fully operational by 2014, but its completion was delayed due to technical problems with the construction of the section of pipeline underneath the Danube River.

The interconnector project will allow for the transmission of gas from the Azerbaijan-Turkey-Greece southern route [the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC)] to Austria through the section on the territory of Romania.
