The Goonyella Riverside mine is an open cut coal mine which produces over 14 million tonnes of coking coal a year. The mine is located 30km north of Moranbah in the Bowen Basin in Queensland. Coal from the project is exported via the coal loaders at Hay Point, 190km to the south west of the mine.[1]
In 2015 BHP Mitsubishi Alliance was given permission for an extension to the Goonyella Riverside mine as part of the Red Hill coal project. Thi could mean that the Goonyella Riverside mine produces 18.5mtpa. Extracting a total of 32.5mtpa between the new Red Hill mine and the extended Goonyella Riverside mine.[2]
The mine is owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), a 50:50 joint venture between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi Development. (BMA also operates the Peak Downs mine, Saraji mine, Norwich Park mine, Blackwater mine, the Gregory Crinum mine as well as the Hay Point Coal Terminal.
