Sir Gordon, "was for 17 years the Chief Executive of the Thomson Organisation (later International Thomson Organisation PLC, currently Thomson Corporation). Thomson's interests included the national newspapers "The Times" and "The Sunday Times". He was directly involved in Thomson's successful diversification into the exploration and exploitation of North Sea Oil. More recently, he has also been Chairman of Mercury Communications. "
