Dr. Grayson Kirk was President of Columbia University in 1967. Grayson testified before Congress about Columbia University's undertaking to study the Strickman filter, a cigarette filter purported to reduce tar and nicotine in smoke. The University acquired the patent rights to the filter. The University kept their work regarding the filter confidential, and doing so led to rumors the school was working on producing a "safer cigarette."[1]
