Background
Hazira LNG Terminal is an import LNG terminal in Gujarat, India.[1]
Hazira LNG was India’s first LNG terminal by a global energy company. It began in 2005 with a 2 mtpa capacity. It rose to 3 mtpa in 2008 and then to 5 mtpa in 2013.[2]
An extensive state run gas grid connects to major gas infrastructure to supply of gas from the Hazira LNG to Gujarat and Maharashtra states in western India, Andhra Pradesh on the southeastern coast, and parts of northern India.[2]
Bloomberg reported that Hazira processing of 5 mta accounts for about a quarter of India's fuel imports in 2016. India imported 18.99 mta in 2016. The country is the world’s fourth-largest buyer of LNG.[3]
Reuters reported in 2017 that India aims to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix from 6.5 percent to 15 percent in the next three years.[4]
As of September 2017 Hazira has imported from cargoes from 17 LNG facilities in the world, ranging from Peru LNG Terminal in the west to Russia's Sakhalin II LNG Terminal in the east.[2]
In January 2019 Shell assumed 100% ownership of the terminal by purchasing Total's 26% share.[5]

Reuters reported in 2017 that Shell's technology center will expand the company’s research and development in Asia.[4]
