The Health Insurance Association of America (HIAA) was the trade and lobbying group for more than 300 health insurance companies, circa 1993. The group worked to scuttle Clinton-era health reform. It operated the anti-health reform front group, the Coalition for Health Insurance Choices.[1][2]

Killing health care reform

HIAA funded the famous "Harry and Louise" ad campaign of 1993-1994 that helped sink President Bill Clinton's effort to reform the ailing American health care system. The campaign was produced by the public relations firm Goddard Claussen and financed with approximately $17 million in funds paid by the Health Insurance Association of America, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, and the Coalition for Health Insurance Choices. It is still regarded as one of the most effective mass-marketing campaigns ever.[3]
