J. Tylee Wilson was President of R.J. Reynolds in 1979. He served on Board of Directors from 1977-83, was President in 1983, Executive Vice President of R.J. Reynolds Industries in 1977-78; Chairman of Board, CEO and President of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco International in 1976 and R.J. Reynolds Foods, Inc. in 1974.

Wilson joined RJR Foods in 1974. He became the first president of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco International in 1976, then oversaw domestic and international tobacco from 1978 until 1983, when he became chief executive officer of Reynolds Industries. He was forced out by Ross Johnson in 1987.

As a young man, Wilson had been Army instructor; a cold tactician and technician; a humorless laugh and a knack for tortured syntax. He rubbed Sticht the wrong way.(Barbarians 1990) Wilson retired in 1987. He received a lump sum payment of $3.25 million, and annual retirement pay totaling about $600,000 (Barbarians 1990).
