Background

Jamaica LNG Terminal is an operating LNG terminal in Jamaica.

The offshore floating storage and regasification terminal will be owned and operated by American company New Fortress Energy, in association with NFE South Holdings. The terminal will feed gas which through a 5 km long pipeline to the new power plant that is being constructed by JPS (Jamaica Public Service Company) at Old Harbor. New Fortress already has another terminal providing natural gas to a power plant in Montego Bay, on the opposite side of the island from the new project. The terminal was planned to be constructed on the Western side of Portland Bight, nearby to the environmentally protected Goat Islands. NFE South Holdings holds the contract to supply gas JPS and other potential consumers.

In October 16, the Jamaican government decided to move the location of a transshipment port which was to be located directly on the Goat Islands due to significant concern over its environmental impact on marine life. While the cancellation of the sea port won't have any direct effect on the floating LNG terminal construction located nearby, conservationists remain concerned over its own potential effects on marine life.

As of 2017, the terminal's commencement is planned for 2018.

New Fortress described the terminal as operational in an investor document in December of 2018.
