Lamberts Point Terminal
{{#badges: CoalSwarm}} The Lamberts Point Terminal in Norfolk, Virginia, also known as the Norfolk Southern Coal Port, is the largest facility in North America for transloading coal from trains to ocean ships for export, with annual throughput capacity of 43.5 million tonnes. The main terminal is Pier 6, which has two shiploaders to load two vessels simultaneously, with combined dumping capacity of up to 7,250 tonnes per hour.[1]
Background
Norfolk, Virginia, is America's largest coal export facility, servicing approximately one-third to one-half of US coal exports since 2000. It shipped 45.2 million tonnes in 2013, although in 2014 its exports slid 19 per cent, to 36.6 million tonnes.[2]
The port is served by the railroads CSX and Norfolk Southern.[3] Coal exports rose by 24% in the 2nd quarter of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010.[4]
Lamberts Point Terminal is legally permitted to release up to 50 tons of coal dust into the air each year.[5]
In 2011 Norfolk Southern Railway announced that it had shipped a record 150,000 net tonnes of metallurgical coal to China out of Lamberts Point Terminal.[6]
