Background

Maithon Power is a joint venture company by Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and Tata Power. (DVC also refers elsewhere on its website as the project being a 1000MW project). The project is on the right bank of the Barakar River in Dhanbad District of Jharkhand, India.

Unit 1 (525 MW) of the plant began operating in 2011. Unit 2 (525 MW) was commissioned on March 23, 2012.

Water

Water for the project comes from the Maithon Reservoir on River Barakar.

Phase II

According to a March 2012 directors' report, the company envisions a Phase II consisting of 2x660 MW, with the environmental impact assessment "under progress."

However, since then the expansion has yet to receive environmental permits, and appears to be deferred or abandoned.
