Marine Stewardship Council
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an independent non-profit that states its aim is to "harness consumer purchasing power to generate change and promote environmentally responsible stewardship of the world's most important renewable food source." The MSC was initially established in 1996 by the environmental group WWF and Unilever, "the world's largest buyer of seafood." [1]
The certification by the MSC of fisheries despite scientific evidence disputing the sustainability of the fisheries and over objections from environmentalists has been the source of ongoing controversy. [2]
