Biography

Dr. Kastenbaum graduated from City College of New York, and obtained his masters' and doctoral degrees in statistics at North Carolina State University. Dr. Kastenbaum wrote more than 25 articles on a range of scientific subjects including biometry, mathematics and genetics. He was a fellow of the American Statistical Association, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the Royal Statistical Society, and associate editor of Biometrics, the quarterly journal of the international Biometric Society. Dr. Kastenbaum has served as a National Science Foundation visiting lecturer, and as a consultant on research contracts to U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He and his wife have two children and the family resided in Potomac, Maryland. Dr. Kastenbaum joined the Tobacco Institute as director of statistics in June, 1970. Prior to that time, he was a special advisor for statistics to the director of the Atomic Energy Commission's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.[1] Oak Ridge National Labs has done work for the tobacco industry.

Kastenbaum attended a key 1971 meeting of the principles of the Tobacco Institute where members shared feelings that cigarette company executives were being "irresponsible" or "a menace." A part of the discussion centered around advertising for "light" cigarettes. [2]

Kastenbaum has knowledge of the Tobacco Institute's, and the tobacco industry's participation in public disinformation regarding the health hazards of tobacco use, the manipulation of nicotine in tobacco products and the marketing of tobacco products to children.
