{{#badges: ToxicSludge}} Matt Cotton "has twenty years of experience in solid waste management planning; permitting, environmental, and regulatory compliance; and composting." He operates Integrated Waste Management Consulting, LLC, which "has provided technical consulting services to public and private clients for over twelve years."[1] Cotton is on the Board of Directors of the US Composting Council where he served as president of the board for three years. He is also a member of the Solid Waste Association of America and was a founding member of the California Organic Recycling Council.

Cotton completed his BA in Geography and Cultural Anthropology at Macalester College in 1986. His first position after college was as a Research Associate at Genereux Research from 1986-1990, where he "conducted solid waste and environmental research" and "completed the first yard waste composting pilot in Minnesota."[2] In 1990, he took a position at Brown, Vence, & Associates, conducting "numerous solid waste projects for public and private clients" and serving as a "firm-wide resource on composting and organics recovery projects." He left in 1995 to pursue his private consulting business.
