Background
In 2012, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) came up with a list of eight locations in the Mekong Delta for construction of coal transshipment ports, including Soc Trang, Nam Du (Kien Giang), and Duyen Hai (Tra Vinh). Plans for Hon Khoai port are being investigated, while Duyen Hai coal port is planned for 2015. The ports would import coal from major coal exporters such as Australia, Indonesia, and Russia for proposed power stations in southern Vietnam.[1]
