Background
In 2004, the Mozdok Kazimagomed Pipeline was connected to the Makat North Caucasus Pipeline, via the Kumli Kizlyar Babayurt Aksai Pipeline. All three pipelines are a part of Russia’s United Gas Transmission System.[1]
Also in 2004, twenty-one people were injured after the pipeline exploded in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, which borders war-torn Chechnya. Police suspect the blast near the regional capital, Makhachkala, was the result of sabotage. The blast left nine Dagestani towns without gas and affected supplies to neighboring Azerbaijan.[2]
In 2010, a bomb was detonated at the 496th kilometer of the pipeline, causing a fire and destroying that section. The pipeline takes gas from Caspian fields in Azerbaijan to the Russian heartland, through the turbulent North Caucasus.[3]
