Nelson Creek Project
{{#Badges:CoalSwarm}} Great Northern Power Development of Denver is a project of Great Northern Properties, the nation’s largest private coal landowner. Kiewit Mining Group of Omaha is a subsidiary of Peter Kiewit Sons’, one of the nation’s largest mining companies. The two companies teamed up to build a combination coal plant and wind farm in eastern Montana and an identical plant in western North Dakota. The Montana project, which would have used lignite coal, was aimed mainly at selling power into the Pacific Northwest power region.[1]
In 2003, the Billings Gazette reported that the sponsors were exploring three locations near Miles City. A key aspect of moving the Miles City project forward was transmission system issues and building new transmission lines from Miles City to Fort Peck and Colstrip.[2] As of October, 2007, the Miles City project appeared to be on hold. [3] Reports in August 2008 indicate that this project may have been moved to North Dakota.[4]
