New Mexico Coal is a wholly owned subsidiary of BHP Billiton which operates two coal mines on or near the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. The company states that it employs 1,009 people and that "some 65 per cent of the workforce is Native American".[1]
The mines are:
- the San Juan mine, an underground mine which supplies coal to the San Juan Generating Station; and
- the Navajo mine, is an open cut mine on the Navajo Indian Reservation which supplies coal to the Four Corners Power Plant.
The company states that New Mexico Coal was "originally an asset of Utah International. Utah was acquired by GE in 1977 and then by BHP in 1984. It became part of BHP Billiton with the merger of BHP and Billiton in 2001."[1]
