Payra Port
{{#badges:CoalSwarm|Template:Navbar-BangladeshCoal}} Payra Port is a small seaport in southern Bangladesh. It was established by an Act of Parliament in 2013. The port was officially inaugurated in 2016,[1] but work is ongoing to to convert the port into a ‘deep sea port’. Payra is striving for a depth of 16 meters by 2025 when the port is fully operational.[2]
The port would have a terminal for loading and unloading of coal, planned for 2020.[3]

Location
The port is located on the west bank of Rabnabad Channel near the Bay of Bengal in Patuakhali, Bangladesh.
History
The Payra Port Authority and the port was established on 19 November 2013 through the Payra Sea Port Act 2013.[4][5] The port started commercial operations from August 2016 under the port authority.[6]
In 2016 China Harbour Engineering Company and China State Construction Engineering signed an agreement with the authority to improve the port.[7] The deals were worth more than 500 million USD and were signed in the Ministry of Shipping in Dhaka.[8]
Coal
The port would have a terminal for loading and unloading of coal, to fuel the nearby Kalapara power station, a joint venture between state-owned North-West Power Generation Company (a subsidiary of Bangladesh Power Development Board) and China National Machinery Import & Export (Group) Corporation.[9]
In January 2015 the Bangladesh government said construction of the port would be fast-tracked.[10]
The Chinese government has planned for a coal terminal at the proposed Sonadia Port, but said it would support a coal terminal at Payra Port if plans for Sonadia did not materialize.[11]
In January 2018 it was reported construction of the coal terminal at Payra was underway for unloading coal from mother vessels for the proposed 1200MW coal-fired Payra power station.[12] The coal terminal is planned for operation in 2020.[13]
