Background

The 760-mile Pony Express (PXP) crude oil pipeline originates in Guernsey, Wyoming, and runs through Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas. It connects with the Ponca City refinery in Ponca City, Oklahoma, before terminating in Cushing, Oklahoma. It is owned by Tallgrass Energy Partners. PXP sources oil from the the Bakken, Denver Julesburg and Powder River plays and sends it to the Cushing oil hub for distribution to markets across the country.

The pipeline was placed in service in 2014, and has a design capacity of 320,000 barrels per day (bpd). According to owner Tallgrass Energy Partners, drag reducing agents can increase the pipeline's capacity to 420,000 bpd.

In building the pipeline, Tallgrass converted a 430-mile natural gas pipeline and built another 260 miles of pipeline to extend PXP through southern Kansas into Oklahoma. Tallgrass also built the 70-mile Northeast Colorado Lateral (NECL), which intersects Pony Express east of Sterling, Colorado.
