Background

The port currently ships 1.2 million tonnes of cargo a year, mostly coal and coke. Owner and mining company Mechel exports coal from Russia's Kuznetsk Basin through the port to countries in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. The cargo is either shipped directly aboard river-sea type ships or transferred in the Kerch Straits onto bulk carriers.[1]
